Glenmore Wind Energy Facility
In early 1998, two wind turbines were built on a farm on a ridge south of
Green Bay to determine the feasibility of generating electricity from the
wind in Wisconsin. Four Wisconsin utilities and two national labs took part
in the project.
Project Details
- Project Purpose
- To install, operate and report on the performance
of two utility-scale wind turbines in helping to determine the feasibility of
wind power in Wisconsin. The average wind speed of the site is 13.6 mph;
therefore the wind turbines are optimized for low wind resource.
The turbines became operational in February 1998.
The two wind turbines generate 1,200 kilowatts of electricity and at full
capacity, the turbines will meet the annual energy needs of about 450 homes.
- Project Description
- Construct and operate two wind turbines on the
high lands in the Brown County Town of Glenmore. Use the operational data to
determine the feasibility of wind power in Wisconsin.
- Land Requirements
- 2.4 acres of leased land from a dairy farmer in
the town of Glenmore.
- Permits
- Town of Glenmore - Conditional Use Permit, Building Permit
- Federal - Federal Aviation Administration (Filed for each turbine)

Wind Turbine and Equipment
- Turbine Design
- Tacke 600-e CWM is a horizontal-axis, up-wind,
stall-regulated wind turbine designed specifically for cold-weather
applications.
A stall-regulated turbine has blades designed to lose aerodynamic lift in
very high wind speeds and thus protect the turbine from excessive loads.

- Turbine Manufacturer
- Tacke Windenergie GmbH, Salzbergen, Germany
- Turbine Weight
- 36 English tons
- Rotor Design
- Three blades constructed of glass fiber reinforced plastic
- Blade Manufacturer
- Huron Windpower Inc, Huron park, Ontario, Canada
- Blade Weight
- 2.2 English tons
- Rotor Diameter
- 151 ft.
- Rotor RPM
- 16/24 (two-stage generator)
- Gear Box
- Three-stage gear box
- Brake System
- Primary - disc
Secondary - disc
- Yaw Drive System
- Electric motor driven with wind direction sensor and cable untwisting control
- Generator
- Asynchronous 6/4 pole switchable allows the turbine to switch from the small
generator stage to the large generator stage.
- Generator Nominal Voltage
- 600 v
- Control System
- The turbines are controlled by a programmable logic
controller (PLC) located inside the control cabinet at the tower base. An
industrial computer is installed at the tower base to monitor and control the
turbine and record operating statistics (record production data, error
statistics, error diagnostics, etc.).
- Integrated Lightning Protection
- The protection system includes lightning arrestors, deep earth grounding, and
shielding.
- Tower Design
- Conical tubular steel, constructed in three sections with internal safety ladder
and nacelle access.
- Tower Manufacturer
- Kleespie Tank & Manufacturing, Morris, MN
- Tower Dimensions
- Tower Height - 197 ft., Tower Weight - 78 English tons, Diameter at Base - 10.5 ft.
- Foundation Design
- Mat with spread footings consisting of 265 yards of reinforced concrete per
foundation (27 cement trucks)
- Rated Power Output
- 600 kW @ 30 mph (13.5 meters/second)
- Turbine Peak Power Output
- 629 kW
- Cut-in Wind Speed
- 6.7 mph (3 meters/second)
- Cut-out Wind Speed
- 44.7 mph (20 meters/second)
- Survival Wind Speed
- 125 mph (55.8 meters/second)
- Integrated Lightning Protection
- The protection system includes lightning arrestors, deep earth grounding, and
shielding.
